Described by Sunday Times as ‘a master storyteller’, Scottish historian, writer and broadcaster William Dalrymple will be in Australia from late October for a speaking tour that will enthral lovers of history and the wonderous, mysterious country of India.

Perhaps Britain’s greatest living historian, Dalrymple is known across the globe for his ability to bring the extraordinary history of the Indian subcontinent to life, whether through award-winning, bestselling books like Return of a King and The Anarchy, or his hit podcast, Empire and now his latest book, the revolutionary; The Golden Road: How India Transformed The World.

Live on stage, William will tell the story of how, for a millennium and a half, India was a confident exporter of its diverse civilisation, creating around it a vast empire of ideas. Indian art, religions, technology, astronomy, music, dance, literature, mathematics and mythology blazed a trail across the world, along a Golden Road that stretched from the Red Sea to the Pacific.

William Dalrymple draws from a lifetime of scholarship to highlight India’s oft-forgotten position as the heart of ancient Eurasia. For the first time, he gives a name to this spread of Indian ideas that transformed the world. From the largest Hindu temple in the world at Angkor Wat to the Buddhism of Japan, from the trade that helped fund the Roman Empire to the creation of the numerals we use today (including zero), India transformed the culture and technology of its ancient world – and our world today as we know it.

Best known for his works on Indian and Islamic history, he has a deep interest in the history and culture of South Asia, particularly India. Dalrymple’s works often explore the intersections of history, culture, and religion, and he is renowned for his engaging narrative style that makes complex historical events accessible to a broad audience.

In addition to his books, Dalrymple frequently writes articles and essays on history, culture, and current affairs, and he is a regular contributor to publications like The Guardian and The New Yorker. He is also known for his work as a documentary filmmaker and television presenter.

Don’t miss this chance to hear the story of how India became the great intellectual and philosophical superpower of ancient Asia.
